The View From Up Here

A giraffe doesn't belong in Texas. Say what you will, but I believe giraffes belong in Africa - that's where they're from, where they roam free, where meals of tree leaves and branches grow high just for us, where they can hang with the zebras - the other stylish creatures. But here I am, a Giraffe in Texas, and these are my stories.

I believe giraffes have long necks for a reason. We see the world from a point of view that hovers just above everyone else's. I think it allows us to see the future a bit more clearly than others. Conversely, we always don't see what is directly before us, which sometimes creates a problem. We extend our necks and stand tall, because for us, it is purely the only way we can roll. We could walk around with our necks lowered, hunched to be at everyone else's level, but we would not last long. It's uncomfortable - it's not who we are. Plus, we would look ridiculous.

We were made to scan the horizon for the best opportunities to share with our friends, to warn them from danger, and to announce our herd with our stature and proud presence. We are a tower of giraffes.

So here in Texas I am, a wild animal in a place tamer than a zoo. I'll definitely have some stories.
